HARKER HEIGHTS, Texas — The 4th of July is almost here, and with the 4th of July comes fireworks.
While people may be fond of fireworks, many pets are not, which means animals who get scared by the loud booms during the holiday could get lost trying to hide or get away from the noise.
The Harker Heights Pet Adoption Center is hosting an event trying to mitigate this problem. On July 2 and 3, the Center is hosting a free microchip event for residents.
The Center said multiple pets turned up on July 2, and the event will continue on July 3, with residents able to stop by the Center, located at 403 Indian Trail, from 1-6 p.m. to have their furry friends microchipped for free.
The event is only open to Harker Heights residents, with proof of residency required, and attendees must provide a valid photo ID and their animal's rabies certificate if the pet is over 16 weeks old.
The Center said the microchips were purchased with donations, and are an effort to make sure that lost pets can be easily reunited with their families.
