MCLENNAN COUNTY, Texas — The Waco Police Association has announced its endorsement of Jeff Aguirre for McLennan County Sheriff in the 2024 election.
Aguirre is running against current McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara, who has held the office since 2013.
The Association said that it chose to endorse Aguirre through a vote by its members, who voted 77.5% in favor of Aguirre and 10% for McNamara, with 12.5% expressing no endorsement at all.
"We acknowledge and commend Sheriff Parnell McNamara for his uncountable contributions to the sheriff's office, bringing about positive changes for the county," said the Association in a statement to Aguirre on his endorsement. "However, our members believe it's time for a change and have expressed confidence in your ability to lead the sheriff's office in the right direction."
"Your commitment to public service, demonstrated leadership and vision for the future align with the WPA's values," the Association continued in the statement. "If elected, we are optimistic that your tenure will contribute positively to our community and the law enforcement landscape."
The Waco Police Association is made up of 322 total members, with 229 sworn officers, 20 civilians and 73 retired law enforcement officers.
Aguirre has also been endorsed by the Hewitt Police Officers Association, according to a post on his Facebook page.
