'I was blown away' | Temple man wins third national mustache championship

Joshua Quinney has been growing his stache since 2014 and has competed all across the world.

TEMPLE, Texas — A 36-year-old Temple man has a set of whiskers like no other. A mustache so profound he's been compared to Wyatt Earp and Sam Elliott!

The Temple High School graduate competes around the nation and in November, Joshua Quinney added a third national title to his belt.

Quinney's journey began back in 2014 when he first started growing a beard.

"I wanted this big, long, awesome beard," Quinney said. "I realized two years in that I grow a not-so-awesome beard, and I was shaving, having some fun with it and left a mustache."

It was something people couldn't stop talking about.

"I'll be walking through the grocery store," Quinney said. "I'll literally see a kid tap their mom and be like, 'Look, look at that.' They'll be like, 'Yeah, babe, it's a mustache.'"

Quinney was bartending in Austin when he took a shot in the dark in 2019.

"I had a bunch of regulars," Quinney said. "They were like, 'Hey, you should compete in the World Championship.'"

He entered and missed the top three by just a hair!

"I went for imperial mustache," Quinney said. "I actually got sixth place in the world, and point wise I was less than a point away from third place."

There was no going back after that. He competed in another world championship two years later, seeing some of the most majestic mustaches in the world.

"I was jaw dropped," Quinney added.

Quinney has competed in five national championships too. In November, he flew out to Daytona Beach for the National Beard and Mustache Championship, winning the best groomed mustache.

He added a third national title to his belt, all while breaking world records with his friends.

"There were several people, enough for us to break a Guinness Book of World Records longest chain over 22 feet," Quinney said.

It's an experience Quinney wouldn't trade for the world.

"I never thought that I would be a national champion when I didn't even grow a beard or mustache till I was like 25 years old," Quinney said. "I was blown away honestly."

Quinney told 6 News he is sponsored by Death Grip Mustache Wax. He explained his routine with all his favorite products.

Nightly I'll use a beard oil. We also have a balm. Usually after the shower, I'll throw in a little bit of the balm, it keeps it all oiled up and keeps your skin nice and fresh underneath. Then I'll follow it up with nice oil. I style my mustache. Not all the time, maybe once or twice a week. There's all kinds of waxes. If you're starting a mustache, Bare Bones is a light hold. Sudden Death is a little more medium hold. You've got Death Grip, which is a strong hold. Then you have Bone Crusher, which is an amazingly strong hold. It's like super glue. It is awesome when you want to do like an English mustache. I have a mustache comb. I have one of these like all the time with me and when it gets a little unruly, I'll just run it through there. Gets it nice and flowing again. There's a mustache wax remover if you like that. They break down the waxes.

Quinney is part of the Austin Facial Hair Club and says it's a great community. They have a competition coming up on Feb. 17, so if you want to enter, this is perfect for you!
