Temple High School theatre students win six medals at State Theatrical Design Contest

Seven students qualified to compete at the state level, earning medals in two different categories.

TEMPLE, Texas — Take a bow!

Theatre students from Temple High School brought home six medals from the University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) State Theatrical Design Contest in Austin this weekend, announced Temple ISD!

Seven students earned their spots to compete at the state level, said TISD, bringing home six medals in two different categories.

According to TISD, Avery Tarbet posted the top finish for Temple High, earning fourth place in the Hair and Makeup competition, with teammate Skyler Gordon taking the next spot in fifth.

Sydney Fisher, Jayden Maiani, Alyssa Olivares and Kira Gray won sixth place in the group design competition, and Aiden Wozniak represented Temple High in the costume design competition, said the district.

“We had seven students qualify for the State Contest, and six of our students placed, receiving state medals,” Kayla Stewart, director of theatre arts for Temple High School, said. “These students have worked incredibly hard, and we are very proud of them!”

TISD said the students submitted designs based on the musical "Hadestown" by Anais Mitchell. The district said hundreds of submissions from across Texas in each category were whittled down to the state qualifiers for judging at the state competition.

“UIL Theatrical Design is a very competitive contest,” said Catrina Lotspeich, director of Fine Arts for Temple ISD. “Temple High School had the most students advance to the state level from any 6A high school. Our students have worked very hard, and we are incredibly proud of their success at the UIL State Theatrical Design contest.”
