'On the Road with Kelli & Bob' makes stop in Mexia to visit Cindy Walker home

Longtime broadcasters Kelli & Bob Phillips visited the Cindy Walker house to highlight the work to save the songwriter's home.

MEXIA, Texas — A familiar Texas storytelling team recently made a stop in Mexia to visit a local landmark. Bob and Kelli Phillips brought their national radio show and podcast to tell the Cindy Walker story.

Bob Phillips interviewed Walker back in the 1970's and returned to her Mexia home on July 12 to get an update on the work of the Cindy Walker Foundation to restore the home to share with their listeners.

"On the Road with Kelli & Bob" is a new radio and podcast show, but being on the road is nothing new for the storytelling team.

"We switched over to radio and podcast partly because it's a little bit of a challenge," Bob Phillips told 6 News. "You notice there's no tv crew."

"We are the crew, we are the interviewers," Kelli Phillips continued. "We're the editors. We're doing it all."

Bob Phillips's voice is unmistakable to many Texans.

"I did the television show in Texas for more than 52 years and I've been everywhere," Phillips said. "Every back road, every paved road in every county everywhere,"

Now, the pair are traveling the entire country to listen to untold stories, including Cindy Walker's.

"We wanted to tell the story about Cindy Walker and about what the Cindy Walker Foundation is doing to preserve all of the great things that she did," Bob Phillips told 6 News.

Bob and Kelli interviewed Cindy Walker's niece Molly Walker about the memories of her Aunt Cindy and sat down with 6 News Anchor and Cindy Walker Foundation Executive Director Lindsay Liepman to hear about the work to save Walker's house and bring music back to the Mexia home.

"Oh my gosh, it's amazing," Kelli Phillips said. "You've gone through a lot but there's still a lot to do, and the fact that you have so many people willing to help."

"It's overwhelming, so you must really be overwhelmed," Bob Phillips laughed. "I can tell you the moment was being handed Cindy's rolodex and that was the equivalent of having somebody on speed dial, and she had them all, everybody right there."

Bob and Kelli even reconnected with a piece of their past, Walker's "Hill Country Theme Song", which was the theme music for "Texas Country Reporter" for years.

"We can't wait to keep telling the story," said Kelli.
