KILLEEN, Texas — The Olympics may be taking place in Paris, but the Killeen Police Department Explorers are taking home some medals of their own this summer right here in Texas.
On July 27, the Explorers competed in the 2024 Amarillo Police Department "Bomb City" Police Explorers Competition, an event that tasked explorers and cadets from Texas police departments with challenges based on Texas law enforcement standardized training.
The KPD Explorers earned two top placements in the competition, placing first in Crime Scene Response and second in the Active Threat scenario.
Teams competed in four scenarios, distributed on the day of the event, according to the Amarillo Police Department. The possible scenarios were:
- Felony Traffic Stop
- Misdemeanor traffic stop
- Arrest, Search & Seizure
- Domestic Disturbance
- Hostage Negotiation
- Gang Activity
- Intoxicated Driver
- Burglary in progress
- Robbery in progress
- Mental health
- Bomb threat
- Unknown call
More information on the competition can be found at this link.
The Explorer program is an official departmental program, said KPD, designed to "acquaint young people with the nature and complexity of Law Enforcement" and help youth age 14-20 "develop into mature, caring and responsible adults with the knowledge, skills and abilities that can lead to careers in the profession of law enforcement."
More information on the Explorer program can be found on the City of Killeen website at this link. Those interested in becoming a KPD Explorer are encouraged to email Commander Tony Lourence at alourence@killeentexas.gov.
