Itasca football player injured during game diagnosed with 'spinal shock', district says

The district said there is no evidence of concussion, fractures or permanent spinal damage at this time.

ITASCA, Texas — An Itasca ISD football player who was injured during a game on Oct. 11 has been diagnosed with a "spinal shock", the district has announced.

The player "took a blow to the head" during a game against Dawson on Friday, Oct. 11, Itasca Superintendent of Schools Tonya Harris told 6 News, and was airlifted to a Fort Worth area hospital.

After "thorough medical evaluation", Itasca ISD said doctors diagnosed the player with what they are calling a "spinal shock".

The district said there is no evidence of concussion, fractures or permanent spinal damage.

The medical team is "optimistic" about the player's recovery, said Itasca ISD, and hopes for a full return to health. The district said the situation remains "delicate", but his "resilience and the support of his family, friends and teammates will no doubt aid in his rehabilitation."

"The entire Itasca ISD family will continue to keep [the player] and [his] family in our thoughts and prayers as they navigate this challenging time," The district said in a release. "We remain united in our support for [him] and his recovery."
