KILLEEN, Texas — At a City Council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30, Killeen Councilwoman Jessica Gonzalez awarded the Star Award to local Pastor Les Williams. The Star Award is given to those who lead community service acts in the city of Killeen.
"The biggest thing for me is that it's affirmation of the work our church is doing," said Williams, who goes by Pastor Les.
Williams has his own style unique from many in his line of work, but despite that, he keeps a humble spirit.
"I wish being a pastor was just preaching. That's the easy part," said Williams.
Having the pressure of delivering a weekly sermon may seem strenuous, but compared to the extra duties Williams puts on his plate, it is not.
Williams coordinates rides for the elderly to their doctors' appointments, makes sure those in need have access to local food pantries and has even hosted 17 block parties in the past 26 months.
Councilwoman Gonzalez says that on top of all Williams' duties and volunteering, he still reached out to her for more charity work.
"There are a lot of unsung heroes throughout the city of Killeen that are doing hard work, in the trenches, all day, every day," said Gonzalez. "You don't see them on the news."
Williams is even responsible for organizing a shoe giveaway that saw over 500 pairs of new shoes donated.
"Since Day 1, before Day 1, when I was even just inquiring about running for City Council, I knew for a fact it truly takes a village to get anything done," said Gonzalez.
