Celebration & Fundraiser being held for family of Waco community member Jimmy Kapavik

Jimmy Kapavik went into the hospital for a rare infection in June and ending up dying on Sept. 30.

WACO, Texas — The Waco community lost a dear figure on Sept. 30 and now there will be a celebration of life and fundraiser for his family on Saturday, Oct. 19.

63-year-old Jimmy Kapavik died from a terrible infection after checking into the hospital at the start of the summer.

Kapavik grew up in West, just north of Waco, and then called Hewitt home. He was known for his cabinetry and woodworking skills and was also an amazing cook. He loved family and the Texas Longhorns as well as the Dallas Cowboys.

A silent auction and benefit for Kapavik's family will be held at Lakeside Tavern near the Waco Airport from 2-8 p.m. on Oct. 19.

Kapavik’s wife Joni told 6 News he died of a rare bacterial infection.

“It was called nocardia, and it's an environmental bacterium that is extremely rare," Joni Kapavik said. "And we're not sure where the bacteria started but it doesn't start in the brain, and it ended up going to his brain and he had brain abscesses.”

Joni Kapavik's best friend Rene Duffy told 6 News they want to help the family through this difficult time.

“Joni will go from a two-income family to a one-income family along with mounting bills so we want to help," Duffy told 6 News.

Over 50 silent auction items have been donated for the event. The family thanks the public for it's generosity.
