'Celebrate responsibly' | City of Temple warns of increased fire danger with fireworks due to brush on 4th of July

The City of Temple is one of many Central Texas cities where it is not permitted to launch fireworks within the city limits.

TEMPLE, Texas — Fireworks may be synonymous with the 4th of July, but the City of Temple is stressing the importance of following ordinances against fireworks this Independence Day, due to increased fire risks.

As cleanup continues in the aftermath of severe storms in May and June, many places around Temple and Central Texas still have piles of dead and dry brush on curbs or in yards. City authorities are concerned that that brush could pose an enhanced risk of fires if residents use fireworks, which are prohibited within the city limits.

“Because of the recent storm, we are going to have an increased risk of fires this year due to all the dead and dried out brush setting at the curbs of the streets throughout the City,” said Temple Fire and Rescue Chief Mitch Randles. “I am concerned that we could find ourselves fighting a large and rapidly spreading fire in these piles of brush from the use of illegal fireworks and that significant damage could be done to nearby homes or businesses.”

In addition to the fire risk, the City of Temple says fireworks can also negatively affect those with PTSD, harm people, damage property and scare animals, which could lead to lost pets.

“As we move forward rebuilding and recovering from the recent tornadoes, I urge residents to continue supporting the community by refraining from the illegal use of fireworks this 4th of July,” said Temple City Manager Brynn Myers. “Let’s celebrate responsibly and keep the safety of others at the forefront of our minds."

The City of Temple said residents can report the illegal use of fireworks at 254-298-5500.

The use of fireworks within city limits is prohibited in most communities in Central Texas, including the cities of Temple, Killeen, Belton, Waco, Copperas Cove, Bryan and more.
