'It's important this time of year' | Copperas Cove food pantry accepting donations ahead of Thanksgiving

'My Brother's House' food pantry feeds over 100 unhoused people with a Thanksgiving meal every year.

COPPERAS COVE, Texas — With the Thanksgiving holiday in two weeks, a food pantry in Copperas Cove is asking for the community's help to feed the unhoused community.

'My Brother's House' has fed and clothed the unhoused community in both Copperas Cove and Kempner for over 30 years. This year, pantry manager Bernard Glowinsky told 6 News their shelves are bare.

"Just last month we helped about 580 families with a total of about 2,000 individuals," Glowinsky explained.

The organization is under 'Feeding America' and receives most of their donations through them.

Glowinsky says the unhoused population has grown over the years. This is why the need for this year's annual Thanksgiving day meal distribution is greater than usual.

Here is a list of some of the donations they are accepting:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Yams
  • Macaroni
  • Meat
  • Canned Goods
  • Corn
  • Cake mix

They also accept blankets and coat donations to give out to organizations that are giving those items away for free.

"We're probably going to have about 100 families on Thanksgiving Day so we try to give to the biggest families who would be the most neediest," Glowinsky added.

Glowinsky added that no matter the circumstances, everyone should have a proper meal for Thanksgiving.

"They need to have some self esteem and they need to feel worthy of it," Glowinsky said. "This is kind of a way we can give back and let them know that they're not forgotten."

To donate items to the food pantry, the drop-off location is 107 Lyons St., Copperas Cove, TX 76522.

Their hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
