Morning Munchies | Arroz Con Leche!

A family recipe to a Dominican dessert.

TEMPLE, Texas — As we continue through Hispanic Heritage month, it seemed fitting to spotlight the Dominican side of my culture. Last week, Morning Munchies brought you a Puerto Rican dinner classic: arroz con gandules; this week we’re sharing my favorite Dominican dessert: arroz con leche.

This comforting dish tastes amazing and will make your home smell amazing every time you’re cooking/reheating. On that note, this dessert is often served warm in my family. However, it can be served cold.

Both recipes being rice-based unfortunately add weight to the claim that Hispanic’s need rice in everything.

Arroz con leche essentially translates to rice pudding and is traditionally a Mexican dish. In the Dominican Republic this recipe is also called arroz con dulce to differentiate it from the former, and heavily features raisins. The following recipe does not include raisins because I personally prefer the dessert without it.

RECIPE

The cooking time for this recipe is 30 minutes with about a 10-minute prep time. The recipe yields over 8 servings.

The ingredients:

-Cinnamon

-Raisins (optional)

-1 can of evaporated milk

-1 can of condensed milk

-1.5 cups of long-grain white rice*

-2 tbs of sugar

-2 cinnamon sticks

-2.5 cups of whole milk

-3 cups of water

*For this recipe we used jasmine rice.

DIRECTIONS

First. Add two cinnamon sticks into a pot of water. As the water is boiling, wash your long-grained rice of choice and add it to the boil.

To a separate bowl, add 2.5 cups of whole milk. One can of evaporated milk, one can of condensed milk and two tablespoons of sugar. Mix.

Let the water fully evaporate before adding your mixture. Now, keep stirring regularly for 30 minutes to ensure no rice sticks to the bottom of the pot. If you’re looking for a thicker consistency, stir longer. Similarly, if you’re looking for a thinner consistency, stir for less time.

Little by little mix in more sugar to taste but it is important to note that the recipe will get sweeter the cooler it gets so be careful.

If you’re using raisins in this recipe, add them in about a minute or two before your time is up.

Finally, garnish with some cinnamon and there you have it!
