TROY, Texas — Veterans who served in wars spanning from 1951 to 2003 were honored with quilts of valor at Troy High School by the Troy Senior Trojans in front of friends, family and more.
This recognition was given to 23 veterans.
"I'm thankful for people that love America, and give their best and I think that's what all those guys did," said Steve Cannon of the 71st Texas Airborne National Guard. 'I compare it to chapter ten Corinthians verse 17 and 18."
The handmade quilt is woven to the specific dimensions and requirements and is hand or machine quilted and registered with the Quilts of Valor Foundation and each quilt reads "Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation."
"They say war is hell but god is good," Cannon said.
Cannon and other veterans said the bond amongst veterans is an appreciation unmatched and called it an honor to be surrounded by fellow veterans of wars past.
"For me they're my brothers and sisters," said Jim Billings, a Vietnam War veteran. "To know that people nowadays know why we did it. And that we really deserve to be understood on why we did it."
Lexi Gunter, a naval veteran of the Vietnam War said the moment meant more than words could describe as he fought back tears.
"It's a blessing to realize that someone would go out and fight for their country and put their life on the line for everybody else," Gunter said.
Gunter said the nearly 100 people on hand meant their service was not in vain.
