Waco Fire Department, Animal Control save dog trapped in ravine

The City of Waco said Buddy is now safe back with his owner.

WACO, Texas — A Waco dog is back with its owner after being trapped in a ravine, thanks to the efforts of the Waco Fire Department and Animal Control.

The City of Waco shared on Wednesday, April 17 that the Fire Department's Technical Rescue Team and Animal Control partnered to rescue the "senior gentleman" dog after it accidentally fell down a steep ravine.

The City said they suspect the dog, named Buddy, had gotten loose and ran behind a house when he fell into the ravine. A good Samaritan reportedly tried to catch the dog, then called it in to authorities.

The City shared a video of Rescue Team members pulling Buddy up on a basket, after which he was scanned for a microchip, which allowed authorities to find his owner, and taken to the animal shelter. The video can be found at this link.

Animal Shelter Veterinarian Dr. Vallon took care of Buddy until his owner could pick him up when the shelter opened, said the City.

The City pointed out that the rescue even occurred on Animal Control Appreciation Week.

The City of Waco shared a few takeaways from the incident for residents.

  • Microchip your pets
  • Report situations in the community
    • Residents are encouraged to call Animal Control in emergencies or report through the MyWaco app or online at Waco-Texas.com/MyWaco.
  • The City has an open position for a shelter veterinarian at WorkForWaco.com. The City says having a shelter veterinarian on-site can help save the lives of incoming animals.
