Central Texas first responders show off their dogs for National Dog Day

The Killeen Police Department, Temple Fire and Rescue and more gave a shout-out to their four-legged coworkers to celebrate the holiday.

TEMPLE, Texas — In honor of National Dog Day, authorities across Central Texas are giving a shout-out to their canine coworkers this Aug. 26.

The Killeen Police Department celebrated by giving a "big round of a-paws" to its five K9 officers, Elza, Lincy, Merlin, Yari and Kenzi!

"These dedicated dogs work tirelessly alongside our police force, helping to keep our community safe," the department stated in a post on social media. "From sniffing out danger to protecting their handlers, our K9 heroes deserve all the love and appreciation today and every day!"

Temple Fire and Rescue also got into the spirit by giving a shout-out to their fire pup Smokey!

Temple Fire and Rescue says Smokey has earned several certifications over the past year, including American Kennel Club AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy and Canine Good Citizen, as well as being a proud member of Go Team Therapy, Crisis and Airport Dogs.

Smokey also makes appearances at events to bring smiles to the community.

Fort Cavazos' III Armored Corps and 89th Military Police Brigade had all paws on deck for the holiday, taking school portraits of 16 K9s! 

III Armored Corps said its dogs are trained for specific jobs like tracking, explosive detection, patrol, search and rescue and attack. According to the Corps, Fort Cavazos has the largest Dog Detachment in U.S. Army Forces Command!

Even the Texas Department of Public Safety got into the spirit, recognizing their numerous "four-legged partners".

Texas DPS said its canine units play a "critical role" in detecting and interdicting criminal activity and keeping drugs off the streets.

"Our canines are a valuable asset to the department, and we are proud to work alongside them to help keep Texas communities safe," DPS said in a post on social media.
