Cameron Park Zoo welcomes new giraffe from San Diego Zoo

The zoo says that Eleanor will be quarantined for at least 30 days before being introduced to Dane and Jenny, the other giraffes also residing there.

WACO, Texas — Cameron Park Zoo announced the arrival of its new Masai Giraffe, 2-year-old Eleanor, on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Coming from the San Diego Zoo, Eleanor was born on Jan. 30, 2021 and she currently weighs over 1,200 pounds. It was recommended that Eleanor come to Waco as she is a match for Dane, the 10-year-old giraffe.

“We are thrilled to welcome Eleanor into our zoo family,” said Zoo Director Brendan Wiley. “Eleanor and Dane represent the future of the giraffe program at the Cameron Park Zoo. They represent our commitment to giraffe conservation.”

According to Cameron Park Zoo, Eleanor will be quarantined for at least 30 days. Following this quarantine, she will be introduced to the other giraffes at the zoo.

Earlier in 2023, the zoo dealt with the losses of two of its giraffes, Penelope and Zuri. Both giraffes dealt with a multitude of health issues which resulted in their deaths.

Eleanor will hopefully serve as a new chapter for the zoo and its Masai Giraffes.
