Fort Cavazos hosting grand opening of National Mounted Warrior Museum Sept. 18

The grand opening will begin with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour of the museum.

FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — The National Mounted Warrior Museum will officially open its doors on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the Fort Cavazos Media Center has announced.

A grand opening for the museum will be held at 9:30 a.m. in front of the museum, located behind the Marvin Leath Visitor Center.

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk, President of the National Mounted Warfare Foundation, and Brig. Gen. Geoff R. Van Epps, deputy commanding general of III Armored Corps, will host the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which will then be followed by a tour of the museum, according to Fort Cavazos.

The museum reportedly features many interactive multimedia exhibits that "highlight the evolution of the Army’s mounted warfare, the accomplishments of the men and women who have served in the United States Army and III Armored Corps and the notable military conflicts which shaped our nation," said the Fort Cavazos Media Center.

The National Mounted Warriors Museum will officially be open to the public the next day on Sept. 19. The museum will reportedly be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and will be free to visit, with no visitor pass required.

According to the U.S. Army Center of Military History, the museum features 12,000 square feet of permanent gallery space, over 1,000 square feet of temporary exhibit space and a 4,900-square-foot rotunda. The museum reportedly sits on 17 acres adjacent to the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment.

Visitors will reportedly be able to learn the history of the mounted warrior through interactive encounters, vehicle displays, educational programming, special events and more.

The museum is a joint effort between the U.S. Army and nonprofit the National Mounted Warrior Foundation. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in November 2020, with building construction being completed in November 2021.
