Dr Pepper Museum wins 2024 AASLH Award of Excellence for historical exhibit

The AASLH said it "recognizes institutions and individuals for excellence in state and local history".

WACO, Texas — Congratulations to a local landmark!

Waco's Dr Pepper Museum has been announced as the recipient of the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Award of Excellence.

The Dr Pepper Museum is one of 47 nationwide recipients of the award this year, and the only recipient of the award in the state of Texas, according to the AASLH, bringing home the award for its The People Who Made Dr Pepper/ Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper exhibition, which shares the stories of people who worked in the building when it was a Dr Pepper bottling plant.

The AASLH says its Leadership in History Awards are "the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history", annually recognizing both individuals and institutions.

Museum staff will reportedly travel to Mobile, Alabama in September to accept the award at the AASLH's national conference.

“Everyone’s story deserves to be told, and Las Personas Que Hicieron el Refresco Dr Pepper makes history accessible to everyone through the inclusion of the voices of those who worked at the plant and creates a more inclusive museum environment for our community and visitors," said Andrea J. Barefield, City of Waco Council Member, District I. "A richer history of Waco is presented, and a more interesting and impactful experience is created for visitors of all backgrounds".

According to the AASLH, the awards program was started in 1945 to "establish and encourage standards of excellence in the collection, preservation and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States".
