KILLEEN, Texas — Kanga, the beloved mascot of Killeen High School, has earned a nomination for the 2023 Greatest Community Impact award from the National Mascot Hall of Fame.
Voting for this recognition began on Wed, Nov. 1, and will end on Nov. 22.
Kanga has been instrumental in supporting the school's band during marching competitions and sharing Killeen High-centered stories.
As of Monday, Oct. 30, the account boasts an impressive following of 541 supporters and has shared 47 posts since its inception on Sept. 2. Kanga's social media presence on Instagram has attracted attention to the school.
According to Kanga's nomination bio on the National Mascot Hall of Fame website, "The account encourages respectful and positive interactions, as well as promoting inclusivity and diversity within the Killeen High School community. Using social media, Kanga has connected members of the local community back to the campus and activities. Engaging with students on social media has been a fantastic way to build a sense of community and school pride."
Killeen High's Assistant Principal, Matt Widacki, shared that Kanga likely made their first appearance in costume in the mid-1960s. The identity of the individual portraying this character remains a closely guarded secret.
