Temple Civic Theatre to perform 'The Mountaintop'

Skeeta Jenkins stars in "The Mountaintop", the Theatre's first play with an all-Black cast, director and writer.

TEMPLE, Texas — Tickets are now on sale for the Temple Civic Theatre's performance of "The Mountaintop."

The play, described by its playwright Katori Hall as surrealistic fiction, centers around the last night of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life.

The two-person play will take the stage five times in March and each showing will be a historic occasion, according to its director Toni Ringgold.

"In the 57-year history of the Temple Civic Theatre, this is the first Black production," said Ringgold. "We're talking about an all-Black cast, a Black director and it is written by a Black playwright."

"The Mountaintop" is lauded by its performers for its range of emotions throughout the play.

"I feel like this play is going to be a roller coaster of emotions. It's going to take you high. It's going to take you low," said Den'Mica Eugene.

"People are going to cry. They're going to laugh," said actor Skeeta Jenkins, who will be playing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Jenkins says he is focused on his own personality playing the famous Civil Rights Movement leader. Jenkins now has a role that A-list actors have played.

"I'm just going to use my voice, and it's a tall task but I think it's one in the season I'm ready for," said Jenkins.

"The Mountaintop" plays at the Temple Civic Theatre from March 7 through March 11. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 pm Saturday and Sunday.

The play is sponsored by the NAACP-Temple Branch
