La Vega High School Girls Basketball celebrating second straight State championship with parade

The Lady Pirates took home their second straight 4A State Title in a 45-36 victory over Canyon in March.

BELLMEAD, Texas — For the second straight year, La Vega High School is celebrating a championship team.

La Vega Girls Basketball took home the 4A State Title for the second year in a row in a 45-36 victory over Canyon in March. A month later, their community celebrated their victory with a parade on Monday, April 15.

From 6-7 p.m., residents and fans were invited to support the team and watch the parade as it traveled through town to La Vega Street.

It was an unforgettable night for all of the Lady Pirates, but especially the seniors. Not one, but two rings in just four years is something special. It's a big-time accomplishment for a group that will go down in La Vega history.

"It's kind of all soaking in because this is my last go around," KP Parr, senior and Wichita State commit, said. "I'll never step foot on a La Vega court again or any other high school court for that matter."

"I'm a senior, but also to have my whole year able to play this year after my injury. Just being able to play the whole way has felt good," Mimi Willis, senior guard and head coach's daughter, said. "From the first time, we knew we were going back-to-back. We preached about it all year."

For Mimi Willis, this year was extra special because she has gotten to live this moment twice with her dad as her head coach. For her dad Marcus Willis, sharing this moment with not only his daughter, but also the community, was something he'll never forget.

"It means a lot. It means a lot just to bring this back to the community. The blood, sweat and tears these girls pour into this program," Marcus Willis, La Vega girls basketball head coach, said. "What better way to finish it back on top. The expectation is to be here, and we're already working on a three-peat."

Not only is the team taking home back-to-back State titles for the first time in school history, but four seniors on the team will be able to end their high school careers with two rings in four years, an accomplishment that will go down in La Vega history.
