'Grandmother of Juneteenth' Opal Lee to be featured as guest speaker at TriCounty Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant in Temple

Lee has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and has been inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame.

TEMPLE, Texas — The Cultural Activities Center in Temple, TX will host the 2024 TriCounty Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Pageant on June 21, featuring a very special guest.

Activist Opal Lee, known as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth", will take the stage as guest speaker at the event, which aims to "develop leadership in our community while promoting education and etiquette".

Lee is an activist known for her work in getting Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday. She has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, by President Joe Biden and was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Fame in 2023.

According to organizer Ramona Trejo-Clark, the pageant's theme is "My Dream My Vision". Young women between the ages of 5 and 18 from multiple counties will participate, said Trejo-Clark, with an opportunity to advance to the Miss Juneteenth National Pageants.

After weeks of workshops and rehearsals, the winner of each age group (K-4th grade, 5-8 and 9-12) will be crowned by a panel of judges based on categories like talent, question and answers and formal wear "with proper poise and presentation", said Trejo-Clark.

Winners will reportedly receive awards and high schoolers will receive scholarships to their college of choice.

The event will be held at the Cultural Activities Center, located at 3011 North 3rd St. in Temple, Texas, on Friday, June 21 at 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

Presale tickets are reportedly $10, with tickets at the door being $15.
