ACT Pasifika dances while raising awareness about Pacific Island cultures

Pacific Island dancing is a vibrant and powerful form of expression.

KILLEEN, Texas — May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

6 News got the chance to catch up with a group who uses dance to tell the story of their culture's rich history.

Pacific Island dancing is a vibrant and powerful form of expression, and Kyan Ramos knows that all too well.

"I love it because it just brings out my true island self,” Ramos said. “I love talking to everyone here. This is my family. I love dancing with them."

Ramos moved from Hawaii to Texas and started dancing with Arts Culture and Traditions of Pasifika, also known as ACT Pasifika.

The group raises awareness about Pacific Island cultures, while showcasing cross-cultural connections. They also share the Island heritage through cultural arts, foods, and performances.

"We are so far away from home, that we like to reach out to other families,” said Darci Ramos. “We share the different cultures from the different islands as well. We have a special bond together.

Darci Ramos and Bonita Jackson are parents of ACT Pasifika dancers. Jackson is also co-director of the group.

“For all of the islands to be able to come together and dance as one is just amazing,” said Jackson. “I cannot describe the feeling it gives me to watch all those different cultures come together and celebrate as one.

The age of dancers ranges from three to 50 years old. Some of the dances are taught by Diane Gucake.

“I'm a little girls dance instructor, and I love it so much because the little girls have passion,” said Gucake.
