'I also wanted to look at some of the quality of life issues' | U.S. Secretary of Army visits Fort Cavazos

U.S. Secretary of Army Christine E. Wormuth addressed recruitment levels, quality of life on post and more in a visit to Fort Cavazos on Jan. 31.

KILLEEN, Texas — Combating low recruitment levels in the Army, ensuring modifications are made to artillery and quality of life were at the forefront of the U.S. Secretary of the Army's visit to Fort Cavazos on Jan. 30 and 31.

Christine E. Wormuth spoke with the press on her second day of the visit. Wormuth noted that being able to see the artillery firsthand will give her the ability to evaluate the modifications needed on post.

The biggest point of change Wormuth wants to see from visits like this is fighting low recruitment and the stress it puts on current soldiers.

"It is putting a lot of stress on our soldiers and the Army is doing a lot to work on that," said Wormuth.

Through meeting with soldiers from around the post, seeing how the artillery works and even using it herself in her two-day visit, Wormuth got a look at the inner workings of programs that are needed to support these men and women.

"Programs like the 'People First Center' have helped over 10 thousand soldiers," said Wormuth.

The program is one Wormuth brought to the post after her first visit in 2021. She saw a need for facilitating ways soldiers and their families could access basic needs to help them live.

In terms of housing and quality of life, Wormuth said projects like bringing new homes to Heritage Heights will help people on post in the long run. Making sure renovations are kept up with and the retention of the maintenance workforce will also help this situation in the long run.
