Scam Alert | Letters claiming State of Texas will seize property for unpaid taxes

These messages can come through mail, texts, phone calls or emails.

TEMPLE, Texas — The Bell County Sheriff's Department is warning residents of fraudulent letters being sent to Texas residents claiming the State will seize their property unless immediate payment is made. 

According to the department, the letters claim the State of Texas will take assets and property for unpaid taxes if payment isn't made within seven days. However, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts says these letters are completely illegitimate.

Texas Comptroller urges people to be careful when you receive an unexpected message like this as they can be a trap. Theses threats are designed to get people to react by calling the number or link provided to solve the problem. However, if you do react by calling or clicking an unknown link, you could be opening yourself up to criminals. 

If you receive a suspicious message like this, Texas Comptroller asks you to contact the Collection Team at 800-252-8880.
