The chief was listed in critical condition after the incident. The Waco Police Department said Wednesday Krumnow had not been able to have anticipated surgeries because of complications.

According to the Riesel Police Department, the chief was in critical condition Thursday with a fever and some infections. RPD said the chief could possibly have surgery to stabilize his ribs Thursday afternoon, but surgeons said they could not operate because of his breathing issues.

Saturday, RPD said Krumnow's breathing was finally improving. He was brought out of sedation and was able to follow a few commands from medical staff.

RPD added the chief may not need surgery to stabilize his ribs.
