TEMPLE, Texas — A man hit by a car in Temple while crossing the street died Monday night, according to his mother.

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on South 1st Street on Monday, according to Temple police.

Paula Taylor confirmed to 6 News Tuesday morning her son Paul Pennington died at 10 p.m. at the hospital.

Pennington was walking across the street near West Ave H when he was hit by a man driving a white pickup truck, police said.

“We believe he was trying to cross the street from east to west and it’s kind of an unlit or darker area down there. The street lights are separated and he was between two of them and according to the driver of the vehicle he didn't see him until it was too late and ended up striking him,” Lt. Brad Hunt with Temple PD said.

Hunt said the driver of the pickup stayed on scene, was questioned and then released.

No charges are being filed, Hunt said.
