KILLEEN, Texas — If you see smoke entering your home unexpectedly, it could be because the City of Killeen started its Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Survey.
Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 11, the city will inspect sewer lines. Although unlikely, the survey could lead to harmless smoke entering homes, according to a press release.
Testing will occur north of Veterans Memorial Boulevard to Fort Cavazos between Fort Hood Street and College Street. Depending on the weather, this phase of the project is expected to conclude by March 2025, per the release.
The city plans to analyze 10% of its wastewater lines each year, with the entire initiative expected to be completed by 2025.
What is smoke testing?
Smoke testing introduces non-toxic smoke into the sewer system to identify contaminations and other issues.
Things to note:
- The smoke utilized by the city will be harmless.
- In rare cases, smoke might enter the home via drain pipes. Residents are encouraged to run water into such drains before the test. Smoke can also enter a residence because of plumbing issues, which needs to be resolved by contacting a plumber.
- Residents in the testing area will receive door hangers with detailed information, including contact details for questions.
- While the testing crew moves to new areas, the City of Killeen will share updates. Households will be notified before testing begins in their area.
- Residents will be notified if the weather affects testing in their part of Killeen.
