City of Waco announces new 'state-of-the-art' landfill set to open in 2025

The city said it'll have a protective liner will be installed to prevent contaminated water from escaping the landfill, plus more.

WACO, Texas — Construction is now underway for the new landfill that'll serve the Waco community and surrounding areas.

The City of Waco announced in a Facebook post Tuesday that the new MSW 2400 landfill will open to the public in May 2025. In the comments, the city said it will be in Axtell.

The city described it to be a "state-of-the-art facility" that's being built with environmental safety in mind.

"After excavation is completed, a protective liner will be installed to prevent contaminated water from escaping the landfill, in addition to a collection system that will dispose of and treat the contaminated water properly," the city said.

The city said the existing landfill is approaching capacity after serving 11 counties and over 30 communities.
