TEMPLE, Texas — You might be looking for a good way to beat the allergies this spring and you're not ready to take on the meds yet.
Well, plenty of people use their own home remedies to tackle the sneezes and watery eyes.
Texas Today's Meredith Haas took to the streets of Waco to hear what everyone does to take care of their allergies.
"I use mint tea and Benadryl," one woman said.
Others said they use honey in their coffee or tea, essential oils, Cedar Fever and some medications like Claritin.
To make sure all of these check out, Dawn Reiss, an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Texas A&M University Central Texas, weighed in.
"Benadryl, yes that helps," she said. "The tea probably goes more with that natural gut health."
Surprisingly, taking care of your gut isn't just beneficial for keeping you away from illness, it can help your allergies too.
Reiss added that the essential oils work because they clear the air ways. Something like Vick VapoRub is a good example of this.
As for the honey, Reiss said it creates a good coating on the throat and can help with irritation. As for the allergy prevention, she said there's a theory that eating local honey can help your body get used to the local allergens.
When it comes to Cedar Fever, she said it can help.
"But if your allergies are getting that bad or worse, you should go to a doctor," she added.
Something allergies can get so bad that you need a shot to help you out.
So even if your home remedies work, remember to just pay attention to your body and what it needs this allergy season.
Happy sneezing!
