Police investigating after student stabbed, killed at an Austin high school

According to the district, Manor Senior High School will reopen Tuesday morning.

AUSTIN, Texas — Update: A mental health evaluation has been ordered for the 18-year-old murder suspect to see if he can stand trial. A court date has been set for Nov. 18. The original story continues below.

Court documents reveal how the deadly stabbing at a Manor ISD high school unfolded on Tuesday.

The incident at Manor Senior High School left 18-year-old Darrin Loving dead after he was allegedly stabbed in the chest with a large knife by 18-year-old Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei.

According to the documents, a school resource officer was patrolling a lunch period at the school when he overheard students yelling "Mac Brown" had a knife. The officer allegedly found Mbanwei with his hands in his pockets and refused to take them out.

A struggle ensued and officers eventually removed Mbanwei's hands from his pockets, along with a kitchen knife. That's also when they found Loving bleeding out after being stabbed multiple times before he died at the scene. Court documents and video surveillance say the incident began in the boy's bathroom.

Mbanwei was arrested and charged with murder and remains in Travis County Jail on a $1 million bond. Meanwhile, both Manor Senior High School and Manor Early College High School will be closed through Friday and all extracurricular activities have been canceled.

Manor ISD superintendent reacts to stabbing

Superintendent Dr. Robert Sormani couldn't speak about the relationship between Loving and Mbanwei, but said the district's next step is bringing in a larger police presence, especially before reopening on Tuesday.

"In the short term, we're certainly going to sit down and look [at] are there some ways that we can enhance not just the visibility? But are there some ways that we can change the traffic flow of students in through the building? But I also think that there needs to be a much longer-term conversation about, is there any other upgrades that we can do to the physical building itself," Sormani said.

The district said how Mbanwei was allegedly able to bring a knife onto campus is still under investigation.

"I will say that I wish we had done something or could have done something," Sormani said. "Because anytime I can find a way to avoid a tragedy, I'll take it."

Counselors will also be onsite and available for anyone who needs support services.
