KILLEEN, Texas — Home ownership has always been a goal for Juleynnie Estevez and her husband Isaiah Estevez.
Juleynnie is an active duty U.S. Army soldier and was transferred from an Army base in Maryland to Fort Cavazos.
While that transfer was taking place, the hunt for their new home began,
"We went to Temple, we went to Copperas Cove, we went everywhere," Isaiah Estevez explained. "We saw very beautiful homes around the area."
When the Estevez's landed in Killeen, the affordability and overall military community prompted them to call the city their official home. After a month, the house that made them feel the most comfortable and was in their price range became their home.
"When we saw the pricing here we were amazed, especially all the size of the property and the yard," Isaiah Estevez added.
Both Juleynnie and Isaiah are first-time homeowners for their families and they're excited to raise their family in Central Texas.
"My husband has been so supportive with us moving so far," Juleynnie Estevez explained. "Having that support system when serving in the military is so important."
The Estevez's aren't the only military family who chose Killeen as their home.
Killeen ranks #7 in the country for Gen Z veteran home buyers, according to Veterans United Home Loans.
"The housing market here in the area still has very affordable price points for people to be able to purchase at an affordable price," Veterans United Home Loans Killeen Branch Manager Danny Reyna said.
Zillow reports the average price for a home in Killeen is just over $220,000, compared to the median home purchasing price being $440,000 across the nation.
In order for more veterans to take advantage of buying a home, Reyna encourages veterans to take advantage of veteran home loans.
"Many veterans aren't aware of the opportunities they have," Reyna added. "That education piece and knowing everything the VA home loan product offers is needed to get them the right home."
The Estevez family also encourage veterans to look into ownership rather than renting.
"Motivate yourself to actually buy a home instead of renting one because it is yours and you could do whatever you want with it."
