Copperas Cove ISD will consider resignation agreement with Jack Welch

Copperas Cove will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss an agreement with its athletic director and head football coach.

The Copperas Cove ISD Board of Trustees will consider and possibly approve a resignation and retirement agreement with Athletic Director Jack Welch, whose absence was first reported last week.

Welch has been the head football coach since 1994. Last week, multiple sources told Channel 6 his office had been cleaned out and the locks had been changed.

Copperas Cove Communications Director Wendy Sledd said the district would not comment on personnel matters. Previous calls to Welch were not returned.

A special school board meeting will be held at noon on April 26 in the CCISD administration building, where Welch will be discussed. According to a publicly-available agenda, "personnel matters" will be discussed in closed session before the trustees had back into open session to consider approving whatever agreement they work out behind the scenes.

Spring football practices have been canceled and football summer camps are currently up in the air according to the Copperas Cove athletic office.

Welch has an overall record of 193-84-1. The Bulldawgs hadn't reached the playoffs since 1960 before Welch's arrival in 1994. Welch led the Bulldawgs to the Class 4A Division I State Title games in 2006 and 2007, finishing as runners-up in both appearances. Cove went to the Class 5A Division II state semifinals in 2008.

Welch has the most wins of any head coach in Copperas Cove history. He also coached Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell's Texas Football also contributed to this report.
