Suspected car thief shoots himself in leg running from police in Belton, officials say

Police pulled over the driver of the truck for a traffic stop near Miller Heights Elementary School on Fairway Drive at East Avenue M. Two people were taken into custody. Two other people ran from officers, police said.

BELTON, Texas — Two suspected car thieves were arrested Monday and two others are on the run after running from police during a traffic stop in Belton, officials said.

Police tried to pull over a stolen pickup truck just before 10 a.m. in the 1300 block of Fairway Drive, not far from Miller Heights Elementary School, when four people ran from the truck, investigators said.

One person was immediately taken into custody. Police said another person was found a short distance away with a gunshot wound in his leg. According to police, the man shot himself as he was trying to jump over a fence to get away from officers.

He was taken to Baylor Scott & White to be treated for his wound.

The two other people who were in the vehicle were not found, police said.

The school was on a brief soft lockdown as police searched for the suspects.
