Caterpillar will close Waco Work Tools facility, slashing roughly 200 jobs

Waco employees will soon be out of their jobs.

Caterpillar Inc. informed employees Thursday that it would close its Waco Work Tools facility by the end of 2018 -- eliminating roughly 200 local Caterpillar and contract positions.

The company's Senior Public Affairs Manager, Jamie Fox, told Channel 6 the decision would not affect the separate Caterpillar distribution center, which is also in Waco.

The Work Tools facility makes buckets, couplers and hammers, according to Fox, who explained Caterpillar's manufacturing of those products would be moved to an existing facility in Wamego, Kansas and to external suppliers.

"The actions taken [Thursday] will optimize manufacturing operations and ultimately ensure our products remain competitive in the global market," Fox wrote in an emailed statement.
