Boil water order lifted in Marlin after water main break

A boil water order has been lifted in Marlin after two main waterlines broke on Park Street.

MARLIN, Texas — Marlin mayor John Keefer said the major main waterline that broke on Tuesday is fixed. However, a second main waterline broke on Park Street around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

The city's water boil advisory was lifted just before 3 p.m. Friday.

"We have turned on the pumps at the plant," Keefer said. "It will take several hours to fill the city, but the line has been repaired."

Several businesses and restaurants were closed in the city Wednesday.

Marlin Independent School District announced on Twitter that it canceled school on Wednesday due to the water issues affecting the city. Marlin ISD's superintendent said there would be school on Thursday.

Some residents had no water, while others just had low water pressure.

One Marlin resident said the water has constantly been an issue.

"I've been here 15 years, and I don't drink the water," Jim House said 'The only thing I use the water for is to take a bath and flush the commode."

House said the city is wasting people's money when it raises the water bill.

"They're always raising the water bill," he said. "They haven't fixed the water at the treatment plant."

Keefer said the city raised the water rates to pay for a $14 million project that will replace the city's aging water lines.

"The state TCEQ has deemed our water to be safe," Keefer said. "The preference of our citizens not drinking the water is a preference, and I respect that. What happened yesterday and today had nothing to do with our water plant."

Keefer said the city's goal is to have everyone's water back to normal Wednesday night.

"When you have infrastructure that's over 100 years old, it's a cast iron pipe," he said. "There are going to be times where it changes and breaks. Unfortunately, this one was back to back."

The city of Marlin issued a boil water order Tuesday after a "major main waterline break," the city said on its Facebook page.

The city said the water line on Park Street affected the entire city. Since the main feeds from all the water towers, it is taking workers longer to repair the break, the city said.

Because of low water pressure, the city is ordering residents to boil tap water in case of contamination.
