Family of Waco man killed, set on fire in 2016 worries case has stalled

Exactly a year after Zachary McKee was indicted for the murder Kenneth Cleveland, the victim's family worried the case had stalled.

WACO, Texas — Jan. 23, 2019 marked one year since Zachary Lamone McKee, 28, was indicted for the murder of Kenneth Cleveland, 61.

When first responders arrived at the scene where Cleveland's body was found in April 2016, they thought he had been tragically electrocuted. But autopsy later revealed Cleveland, an AT&T worker, had been stabbed 13 times in the back of the head and neck.

Waco Police said McKee confessed to stabbing, cutting and beating Cleveland multiple times before lighting him on fire in the 500 block alleyway behind and between N. 14th St. and Novelty St.

Family members said they fear the case has stalled, and Barry Johnson, the new District Attorney, has not given them any updates.

"In order for us to move forward with our lives, part of it comes with the prosecution of the person who took our dad's life," Amber Cleveland, Kenneth's daughter, said. "So we're kind of in this awkward place waiting for something to happen again."

According to Johnson's office, McKee is on the docket to go before a judge Feb. 18.

McKee is currently in the McLennan County Jail on $500,000.
