Cameron man indicted for murder over fatal shotgun shooting death

A Central Texas man has been formally charged over a fatal shooting.

A Milam County Grand Jury indicted a Cameron man this past Thursday in connection with a 2017 shooting death.

Alvin Melton, 35, was indicted on a charge of first degree murder over the death of Courtney Latrell Williams.

Back in September, Cameron Police arrested Alvin and his brother John Melton after investigators said Alvin fired a shotgun and hit Williams while Alvin and John were arguing with each other in the 400 block of South Jefferson Ave in Cameron.

During the dispute, John Melton, 46, threatened his brother Alvin Melton, 35, with a knife -- leading Alvin to grab a pistol grip Mossberg 500 shotgun from his bedroom, according to Cameron Police. Alvin confronted John on the front porch and discharged the shotgun, but he ended up striking the right side of 32-year-old Williams' head -- killing Williams instantly, police said at the time.

Alvin and John Melton were arrested next door and transported to the Milam County Jail, where Alvin was held on a first degree murder charge and John was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon -- a second degree felony, according to police.

Williams' body was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy, at the order of Justice of the Peace Sam Berry.

The Milam County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Texas Rangers assisted the Cameron police Department in the homicide investigation.
